Report on the TNG observations of Nov. 15 & 16. ITP Time, PI X. Barcons, Observers: T. Maccacaro and R. Della Ceca Support astronomer: M. Pedani Instrument: DOLORES, long slit mode First night: WARNING we noticed that often in the header the object name is not read in correctly. This is due to a bug and happens when the identifier is too long. Please check log. Grism : LR-B Slit: 1.5, 2.0 (1.9), and 5" Frame: trimmed as follows: Acquisition image: 500-1600 x 500-1600 Spectra: 0-2100 x 500-1300 Slit position: 1.5" (x=1005.8; y=900) 1.9" (x=1013.9; y=900) In the afternoon calibration are carried out as requested. Dome flat with Alg1 as follows: 12s, slit = 1.5, grism = LR-B 3 frames 25s, slit = 1.5, grism = HR-V 3 frames 10s, slit = 1.9, grism = LR-B 3 frames bias: 9 frames Arcs with Th lamp (as suggested) 150s, slit = 1.5, grism = LR-B 300s, slit = 1.5, grism = LR-B 120s, slit = 1.9, grism = LR-B 300s, slit = 1.9, grism = LR-B 1800s, slit = 1,5 grism = HR-V Then at sunset 3 sky flat with slit = 1.5 and grism = LR-B and 3 sky flat with slit = 1.9 and grism = LR-B and Sky condition not good, I am told that previous 9 nigths were lost because of bad weather. Lot of clouds. Yesterday night TNG opened around 3:30 am after humidity dropped from 100% and did observe in very poor and variable seeing (from 2" to 5") for a few hours. After focussing, checking the pointing, SH test, etc. we go to the first object (PKS2126_006_A). Acquisition image reveals poor seeing and clouds, objects is too faint (not even visible on first acquisition image). Given meteo we try with a much brigther object from the backup program (MOS BS). In the meantime humidity is rising (iat 8:00 local time) the operator closes the dome before we can get to the field. Dome re-opened @ 9:40 We go again at the very first object (PKS2126_006_a) but again conditions are not good for such a faint object. We thus switch to the backup program. We observe XBS015916+003014 (30m). Despite the source is fairly bright only an average spectrum is collected. We then move to XBS015957+003311 for a 30m exposure. During the integration the operator reports light cirrus passing by. Next we observe XBS020029+002849 (30m). We are continuing with the "bright" sources in the backup program because of bad conditions. Seeing is now about 1.7. We will check focus since temperature has changed. 11:50 - more cirrus Next we observe XBS020757+3518. Exposure interrupted after 240s because of humidity. Dome closed again at 12:35. Dome re-opens at 1:10 We start again with XBS020757+3518 (20m) Seeing at 2 arcsec Next we observe XBS021640-0444 Humidity rising again. Exposure interrupted after 290s. Dome closed at 1:55 Dome reopens at 2:15 Previous target abandoned Observation of "standard" star: G191-B2B (2 spectra taken, first one is saturated) Seeing at 2.5" at 2:30 Changing slit to 2.0" We observe XBS074222+494149 (30m) Seeing is very variable. Slit back to 1.5" We observe XBS103935+533037 (20m) Slit back to 1.9" We observe XBS112022+125252 (30m) Focus routine Still on XBS112022+125252 (28m) Last source of the night is XBS112046+125430 Observed with 1.5" slit for 17m (getting into twiligth) Poor spectrum, must do again. Repeating dome flats, bias and arcs for the LR-B grism only and 1.5" + 1.9" slits. SECOND NIGHT Cloudy, we wait and see. We do a few more calibrations. Sky flat impossible. It clears a bit so we open and see if we can work (8:50). Seeing approx 1.5" Focus. Difficulty in finding guide star because of clouds. Seeing variable! Force by meteo to stick to Bright Objects (i.e. backup program) First source: XBS221722-082018 Seeing 1.8 @ 21:00 Second source: XBS221821-081330 Seeing 1.9 @ 22:30 Exposure of XBS221821-081330 stopped because of clouds (+ guide star lost). We have to move to east. Next source: XBS015916+003014 Re-focussing needed. Too many clouds, observations suspended (22:40). Object abandoned, too thick cloud. Next source XBS021640-044404. No object in image!! Thick clouds. Acquisition again. 20m exposure hoping that clouds will go away at least for 5 minutes! Back to XBS002618+105019 Situation has improved (from acquisition image). Back to XBS015916+003014 Seeing always oscillating between 1.4 and 1.8 DOLORES FWHM (see acquisition images) worse than seeing. Rotate slit to get 2 objects very close. Next source is XBS020916+351848 FWHM of images remains large. Seeing @ 01:05 is 1.9" Next source is XBS051655-104103 Focus sequence. Faint cluster, 2 objects in rotated slit. Next source is XBS074020+311838 Wrong coord input by operator. While correcting, humidity hit 90% and operator closes dome (03:12) Rains starts, this is it for the night LOG OF SECOND NIGHT EXSF0009 Arc ------------------- 120 5.0 LR-B 19:35 Thorium EXSF0010 Arc ------------------- 500 5.0 LR-B Thorium EXSF0011 Arc ------------------- 240 5.0 LR-B Helium EXSF0012 Arc ------------------- 480 1.9 LR-B Helium EXSF0013 Arc ------------------- 600 1.5 LR-B Helium EXSF0015 Flat ------------------- 4 5.0 LR-B EXSF0016 Flat ------------------- 4 5.0 LR-B EXSF0017 Flat ------------------- 4 5.0 LR-B EXSF0035 XBS 221722-082018 30 ima 21:15 EXSF0038 XBS 221722-082018 1800 1.5 LR-B 21:20 EXSF0039 XBS 221722-082018 1200 1.5 LR-B 21:50 EXSF0040 XBS 221821-081330 30 ima 22:11 EXSF0042 XBS 221821-081330 1017 1.5 LR-B 22:19 EXSF0050 XBS 015916+003014 30 ima 22:50 EXSF0051 XBS 015916+003014 30 ima 23:00 EXSF0052 XBS 021640-044404 30 ima 23:10 EXSF0053 XBS 021640-044404 30 ima 23:15 EXSF0056 XBS 021640-044404 1200 1.5 LR-B 23:20 EXSF0057 XBS 002618+105019 30 ima LR-B 23:47 EXSF0059 XBS 002618+105019 900 1.5 LR-B 23:52 EXSF0060 XBS 015916+003014 30 ima LR-B 00:15 A & B EXSF0063 XBS 015916+003014 30 1.5 LR-B 00:25 A & B EXSF0064 XBS 015916+003014 1200 1.5 LR-B 00:27 A & B EXSF0065 XBS 020916+351848 30 ima 00:50 EXSF0067 XBS 020916+351848 900 1.5 LR-B 00:56 EXSF0068 XBS 020916+351848 600 1.5 LR-B 01:12 EXSF0069 XBS 051655-104103 60 ima 01:25 EXSF0081 XBS 051655-104103 60 ima 01:44 EXSF0082 XBS 051655-104103 60 ima 01:54 rotated for A&B EXSF0084 XBS 051655-104103 1800 1.5 LR-B 02:00 EXSF0085 XBS 051655-104103 1800 1.5 LR-B 02:30 EXSF0086 XBS 074020+311838 30 1.5 LR-B 03:11 wrong position Following frames are calibrations similar to beginning of first night but without HR-V.
