AXIS Observing Report ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dates: 2001 June 12,13,14,15 Instrument: ALFOSC on NOT Observers: Pete Wheatley, Silvia Mateos, Darren Baskill Grisms: 4, 7 Slits: 0.75, 1.3, 1.8, 2.5 arcsecs Filters: B, V, R (for SS397) Observing conditions: Generally good conditions. Mainly clear skies, though not actually photometric except perhaps on first night. First night we were severly constrained by high winds which forced us to observe downwind for most of the night and probably contributed to poor seeing through buffeting of telescope. Dust on third and fourth nights. Worst on third, but not a serious problem. Seeing: 12th Started poor at 1.4" and suddenly deteriorated to >2" at around the time we made photometric measurements of SS397. 13th Poor at 1.4-1.5" 14th Started good at 0.9" and improved to 0.7" 15th Start very poor 1.8" imporved gradually to 1.2" Time lost: None Targets observed: (in RA order) N=night, Src=PN ML src number, Mag=USNO, G=grism Field N Src Mag G Exp Comments CL0939 3 032 ? - - Tried but gave up: v faint, high ZD and dust HD111812 2 002 19.4 4 3600 Broad emission line (agn?) Also SS397 photometry (BVR with Landolt standard field 110 before and after). Chip binning/windowing: Used NOT recommend chip windowing for spectra. Used 2x binning in spatial direction only during bad seeing. Used smallish window for object acquisition images. Used full chip for SS397 photometry. Rotator: Different rotator angles were choosen for many fields in order to place two or more candidate objects on the slit simultaneously. Calibration frames: For each field pointing took He (1s and 5s) and Ne (1s) arcs, and usually 3x 5-30s (depending on slit) Halgen flats. Also took some sky flats with no filter, grism or slit; and some sky flats with slit and grisms (for slit illumination). Biases taken each night for each binning/windowing combination used.
